“PLASTIC TRASH FLOWING INTO OUR SEAS WILL NEARLY TRIPLE BY 2040 WITHOUT DRASTIC ACTION”, stated National Geographic in a report they wrote this year.
They spoke of how critical it is for all of us to change our way of living right now and shift to a circular economy where we recycle and reuse. Experts believe (through major studies) that by adopting this way of life and transforming the way we do things; we could actually reduce the annual flow of plastic waste into our ocean by 80% over the next 2 decades.
This is all great in theory but how do we actually make this happen. I certainly don’t have all the answers but I do believe that we need to take recycling more seriously. Governments world-wide need to enforce this; recycling bins need to be everywhere, money needs to be spent on more recycling facilities (put them in each town, with recycling drop off points in each suburb), fine people for not recycling and make corporations that constantly create virgin plastics using natural resources accountable for their actions. Hell, if The Covid Pandemic has taught us anything, it’s just how powerful our governments are. How will we ever forget our year 2020; when sun baking at the beach was illegal, if you gathered in groups of 5 or more, you’d be fined, if you left your apartment during quarantine you’d be arrested and if you were caught dancing at a restaurant, bar or pub you’d get a hefty fine as well. My point is, If the government can enforce all these rules for “OUR SAFETY and THE SAFETY OF OTHERS”, then surely our "PLASTIC PANDEMIC" holds this much merit too. This is our future and we must change it drastically but for drastic change, we need drastic measures.
Where do we go from here???
